"Downtown in December"

There is always a lot going on during the holiday season! "Downtown in December" presented by Devon is full of fun, family friendly events, as well as unique shopping opportunities and beautiful sites and scenery.

Sharing a cup of cider or cocoa and strolling through the beautiful light displays throughout the Myriad Gardens, Canal and Automobile Ally will surely prepare your hearts for Christmas as you try to forget about the nearly 80 degree weather earlier this week. If you are looking for a romantic, but inexpensive date night, or a special time with the family, there are many events that may spark your interest this season.

Luke and I started dating in November of 2009, so Christmas lights and hot cocoa are kind of nostalgic for us. Now as our baby girl is due in February, we have a whole other set of memories to create as married, expecting parents.

What new memories will you make this year?

Blessings. Enjoy the Local Flavor, and don't forget to tell us about it!

-Myriah Walker

Thanksgiving Already! - Native American Heritage Celebration

It seems like the holiday season has sneaked up on us so quickly! Halloween has already passed, and Thanksgiving is next week. It doesn't seem possible! I enjoy all the fall festivities, the foliage and the smells! When I was growing up I remember playing outside in the chilly, damp weather, kicking around crunchy (or soggy) autumn leaves and smashing acorns. I will still go slightly out of my way to step on a crunchy-looking leaf. :)

This year I am assisting Luke in Real Estate at Keller Williams Elite. It is my first year not to teach school, or be in school, and it is a different experience. About this time my class would be learning about our first Thanksgiving with the Pilgrims and Native Americans, going to a Pumpkin Patch, and enjoying their parents coming to school to eat a Thanksgiving feast with them! A few years ago I went to my nephew's school and ate the exact same meal we had when I was in school (right down to the odd tasting, orange sprinkled, pumpkin shaped cookie). I guess I can give them a gold star for consistency..... It is definitely the time of year for family fun and activities!

Learning about why we do the things we do, as well as history of our Native people can always serve as an asset to us. When we as a people don't pay attention to where we have come from and drudge unknowing into our future, lessons we could have otherwise avoided are bound to repeat themselves. Although I realize one fun lunch event may not change the course of our lives, we can still enjoy getting to know about our Native Heritage in Oklahoma and may be take time to reflect how our lives have been shaped as a result of what was.
The Native American Heritage Celebration looks to be an enjoyable time of storytelling, singing and dancing, as well as a free lunch (featuring traditional foods)!

Enjoy this time of reflection and family fun! We will continue to try to keep you updated on Local Flavor as the hustle and bustle sweeps the City!

Blessings,
Myriah Walker

The Great State Fair of Oklahoma!

Well, it's the first day for the State Fair! Usually what does that mean for Oklahomans? Rain. Well, not just rain. :) There are so many activities that go on during the Fair! Not only do you have the carnival rides, but you have vendors with super cool crafts and goods, demonstrations of various products or talents (like blacksmithing, graffiti painting, Fire Fighter Training, or goat cheese soap making), a circus, an auto show, various musical entertainment, concerts, farm animal shows (from pygmy goats to horses), a petting zoo experience called 'The City of AGtropolis,' barrel racing, competitions, Native American dances, Disney on Ice, games you can play to possibly (may be) win a prize, and so, so, so many other activities that I can't even begin to describe. Not even joking, because I tried. I have provided you a link at the bottom of the blog that will direct you to a daily schedule of events. They really do have something for everyone.

If you don't go for anything else, you might as well go for the food. Wow food. Don't bring your Weight Watchers book or calorie counters here, 'cause "ain't nobody got time for that" at the State Fair: chocolate covered bacon, turkey legs, Indian Tacos, fried cheese curds, and anything you want on a stick that is deep fried and delicious should be available.

While you eat, you can stroll through the fairgrounds and people watch. Why would you want to people watch? Well, people are interesting. When a lot of people from all over come to one place, one should always take a moment to appreciate and enjoy all our differences.

Our State is a pretty cool place. We have a lot going on, and I hope you will take time to enjoy some local flavor!

Have fun at the State Fair!

Lake Hefner Kiteboarding

If you live around Oklahoma City and are passing by Lake Hefner, you may see some people flying huge kites... Upon further inspection you may notice the people are attached to the giant kites and are zipping around the lake, like truly surfing on the water by allowing the kite to propel them. "Kiteboarding" on Lake Hefner has to be one of the most fun-looking sports I have ever witnessed. Recently we found out how to become a "Kiteboarder" or like my wife Myriah says "Wind Surfer." You can schedule appointments for two classes to learn how to kiteboard. The first lesson is on land, and the instructors teach you how to do everything you need to know in the water on land. The second lesson puts you in the water to put to practice everything you learned in the prior lesson, and practice working with a bigger kite. According to the website they spend two hours on the first lesson for $100 and $175 for the second three hour water lesson. They teach you everything you would need in order to become a surfer! If you sign up with a friend or with a group you can get a 20% discount. That's awesome.
No worries, Myriah is not going to be wind-surfing, as our child is due in February. But before this Summer is up for you, this is another example of some exciting OKC flavor. Enjoy!

What: Lake Hefner Kiteboarding lessons
When: Every Saturday at 10:00 AM, or one on one lessons weekdays from 8:00-5:00PM, depending on at least a 15mph wind

Whole Foods Market is hosting a cooking class to help busy individuals get back into the swing of things this school year with "delicious back to school ideas! Chef Terri will lead a class on time-saving meal solutions!"

Paseo Gallery Walk

First Friday Gallery Walk
  - Aug 03, 2012

My wife and her dad use the Gallery Walk as a father-daughter date night, and leave me to my own devices (usually working at KW). Myriah's dad was a drama major and disk-jockey in the 70's and he seems to believe "his people" come out to the Gallery Walk. He loves to people watch and view some of the local artwork and photographs. He commented that the next time they go, he will not eat dinner beforhand, as many galleries put out light and even some heavy appetizers for the gallery-goers to enjoy. There is live music, art openings, and wine tasting, and there are non-alcoholic beverages for those of us who don't drink.

"Over 75 artists in more than 20 galleries participate, all within walking distance. Four to six art opening receptions on Friday night showcase the new work of the gallery owners or the work of guest artists." - TravelOK.com
